WICHITA FALLS-As the Borger Lady Bulldogs were entering the 4A soccer playoffs for the fourth season in a row, the expectations were that the team would hopefully find a way to break through to the area round to capture the first playoff victory in the history of the program in their contest against the Abilene Wylie Lady Bulldogs yesterday in Wichita Falls.
Unfortunately, Abilene Wyile showed what they entered the contest with an impressive 19-5-1 record and showed they were the District 6-4A champs by coming out early on their way to getting the 7-1 win to end Borger’s season.
Abilene Wylie would not waste much time getting on the scoreboard with Julia Patterson receiving the pass in front of the Borger goal where she put the ball in the lower left corner of the net in the third minute to make it a 0-1 game.
Credit has to be given to Abilene Wylie for doing a good job throughout the game of moving the ball around to find good shot angles.
In the 12th minute, Borger had their first opportunity to try to get on the scoreboard on a free kick by Hannah Blakely from about 35 yards out. However, the ball sailed just high of the top crossbar keeping Borger off the scoreboard.
Throughout the first half, Abilene Wylie continued to be on the attack forcing the Borger defense to step up to help out the goalkeeper, including Haley Calder making a great play in front of the net in the 18th minute.
But in the 20th minute, Abilene Wylie would take a 0-2 lead when Allie Preston put in a free kick in the left side of the net from about 20 yards out.
In the 32nd minute, Borger finally cracked the scoreboard when a free kick from Blakely hit the crossbar where Samantha Huckabee would be there in front of the net to punch in the ball to make it a 1-2 score.
Borger tried to use the goal to spark some momentum that included Kaleen Dean trying to put one in the net in the 34th minute.
However, Abilene Wylie grabbed the momentum back in the 35th minute when Cassidi Esman broke away for a one-on-one where she put the ball into the right corner to give Abilene Wylie a 1-3 game.
Abilene Wylie essentially sealed the game in the 41st minute when McKenna Martin put in a shot that would be just out of reach of the Borger goalkeeper to make it a 1-4 game.
Abilene Wylie would not let up in the second half with the team in purple scoring three more goals before it was all said and done that included Preston leaving the field with a hat-trick.
Borger’s season comes to an end with the team posting a 9-11-0 overall record.
