After an up-and-down trip south during Spring Break, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen returned home this weekend to take on the NMMI Broncos in a four-game WJCAC series.
In the first two games on Friday, the Plainsmen took care of business on their home field by coming away with two wins, 7-4 and 8-5.
Game one: Frank Phillips 7, NMMI 4
The Broncos opened the first game strong at the plate by scoring three runs in the first inning.
However, the Plainsmen used good second and third innings to score seven runs to take a 7-3 lead where they were able to hang on for the 7-4 win.
Sophomore Stephen Seger got the win on the mound with Perryton native freshman Skipper Lumley pitching the final inning.
Game two: Frank Phillips 8, NMMI 5
Sophomore Leo Vargas crossed the plate to give the Plainsmen an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. However, NMMI responded by scoring three in the second and third to take a 1-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Plainsmen tied the game up with a RBI double by Travis Montgomery and a RBI single by Jenner Jones.
NMMI used RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings to take back a two run lead, 3-5. But fortunately the home team rallied in the sixth and seventh innings to score five runs to make it a 8-5 game.
Vargas started the Plainsmen rally with a two-RBI double in the sixth inning followed by a sacrifice fly by Ceasar Wong.
In the seventh Nolan Hoskins brought in a run on a RBI double followed by a RBI single by David Dorton.
Randy Vaughn got the win on the mound for the Plainsmen, pitching seven innings with Regan Calvert and Brady Capshaw pitching the final two innings.
The two wins take the Plainsmen’s conference mark to 5-5 with NMMI and the Plainsmen wrapping up their series today.
The Plainsmen will travel to Colorado on Tuesday for a doubleheader with Lamar CC before returning to Borger for a four game series with El Paso CC starting on Friday.
