The West Texas Lady Comanches held off a late surge by the Lady Mustangs from Claude to get their first District win 13-9 in Stinnett yesterday.
Devin DeLapp went 3-5 with a double, a triple, and two RBIs to lead the Lady Tribe in the wind and dirt.
Chay Sargent went 3-4 with a double and two RBIs. Abby Rios also had a double. Hailee Flaharity had an RBI on a sacrifice.
The teams were tied one all after the first inning, and the Lady Comanches went up 3-1 after the bottom of the second inning. Chay Sargent got on base with a base hit and scored after Erin Summers got on base with a Claude error. A double to center by DeLapp brought her across the plate.
Claude briefly tied the score in the top of the third, but West Texas put up four runs on hits by Rios, Lanie Hazel, Erin Frost, and Sargent. WT had a great inning defensively with three up and three down in the top of the fourth.
The Lady Comanches put up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on base hits from Abby Summers, Sarah Kelly, Rios, and Sargent. WT was up 10-3 after four innings.
Claude put a couple of runners on in the top of the fifth, but WT did a great job of keeping them on base. The Lady Comanches had a chance to put away the Lady Mustangs in the bottom of the fifth with the “mercy run rule”. They needed three runs to end the game. They got two across and had the bases loaded, but left all three stranded. They led 12-3 after five.
The Lady Mustangs got three more runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 12-6. WT added one in the bottom of the inning to take a 13-6 lead. Claude scored three runs in the top of the seventh and had two runners on base, when WT ended the inning and the game with a 13-9 lead.
Abby Summers pitched six and a half innings. Danielle Heater took the mound in the top of the seventh with two on base and two outs. She struck out the batter for out number three to give WT the win.
The Lady Comanches are 1-1 in District play.
