DUMAS-For their first year participating in high school soccer at the varsity level, it is hard not to be somewhat impressed with fact that the Dumas Demons are flirting with a .500 record and can clinch a playoff spot with a Canyon loss or tie to Pampa on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately that shot at a District 5-4A playoff berth will come at the expense of ending the Borger Bulldogs season on Friday night, as the Demons were able to come away with the 3-1 victory at Demon Stadium.
Going into Friday night’s regular season ending contest, both the Demons and Bulldogs were tied at 3.5 points in the District 5-4A standings, along with the Canyon Eagles, meaning that the winner of the match would still alive for a playoff spot and would be watching Saturday’s Canyon-Pampa game closely, while the loser would end up being one of the outside teams looking in at the playoffs.
The game between the Bulldogs and Demons proved to be a very physical contest throughout leading to aggressive play and a couple of tempers flaring up on both sides of the field.
In the fourth minute the Bulldogs had their first opportunity for a goal when George Siffuentes found a crease in front of the net but came up just short of putting the ball past the Demon goalkeeper.
In the 8th and 12th minutes, the Demons tried to break away for one-on-one match ups with Bulldog goalkeeper Alberto Rangel, however in both cases the Bulldog defense did a good job getting to the ball to end any scoring threat by the Demons.
In the 25th minute, the Demons got the first big break in the game as the Bulldogs were called for a penalty setting up Eh Thaw for a penalty kick in front of the goal. Thaw would put the ball in the left corner of the net giving the Demons a 0-1 lead.
The Demons added one more goal in the first half, as the breaks continued to go Dumas, when the Demons were able to set up for a free kick about 25 yards from the Bulldog goal. The Demons would kick the ball near the net where Rodrigo Salas would find the the corner of the net open to give the Demons a 0-2 lead in the 33rd minute.
The second half started well for the Bulldogs as Pierce Martin and Siffuentes got the ball to Paco Ibarra who would put the ball in the goal in the 41st minute to pull Borger back to within one goal, 1-2.
The Bulldogs continued to stay aggressive in the second half but the team in red could not find the good looks they needed in order to tie the game back up.
In the 65th minute, the Demons essentially sealed the win when Armando Lopez put the ball into the open net to make it a 1-3 score.
Martin and B.J. Brittain each had opportunities to try to add a goal for the Bulldogs in the final 15 minutes of play, but in both cases their shots would come up short allowing the Demons to hang on for the win.
With the loss the Bulldogs end the 2011 season with a 6-12-1 overall record and a 3-8-1 mark in District 5-4A play.
