Friday afternoon old district foes tangled at Huber Park with the Lubbock Estacado Matadors in town to take on the Borger Bulldogs in non-district baseball action.
The Matadors have been one of the better 3A baseball programs in West Texas over the past couple of years and would be a good challenge for the Bulldogs as they get closer to District 1-3A play.
Friday’s contest would be a tight one with neither team pulling away to more than a one run lead. However the Matadors would get the one run they needed in the top of the eighth inning to leave Borger with the 6-5 win.
Borger senior pitcher Hunter Hertel pitched a solid game in the loss by going all eight innings striking out nine with giving up six runs on seven hits.
The Matadors got on the scoreboard first on a rbi single however the Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the first inning with Garrett Irwin hitting his third homerun of the week followed by Zach McDonald hitting an rbi single to make it a 2-1 game.
Two Bulldog errors in the top of the second inning led to Estacado bringing two more runs across the plate. But the Bulldogs would retake the lead in the third inning on a rbi single by Brandon Garcia and a sacrifice play by Clay Ellis to make the score 4-3.
The Matadors added a run in both the fifth and seventh innings to take a 4-5 lead with the Bulldogs needing to add at least a run to keep the game going when they came to bat in the bottom of the seventh.
The Bulldogs responded as Irwin and Hertel reached base on singles, followed by an intentional walk of Garcia to load the bases with only one out.
An error on an infield hit by Ellis brought in one run to make it a 5-5 came, however the Matadors were able to get off the field without allowing Borger to win with seventh inning heroics causing the game to go into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth the Matadors used two singles to score the go-ahead run to make it a 5-6 game.
Acton Smith opened the bottom of the eighth with a single to rightfield and reached second base on a bach with no outs.
However Smith would not be able to cross home plate, as the Matadors turned a 2-3-5 double play followed by a strikeout to hang on for the win.
The Bulldogs go to 8-9-1 on the season and will take on Amarillo River Road next Saturday in their final tune up before District 1-3A play gets underway on Tuesday, March 29th hosting Dalhart at 5:00 p.m.
Irwin-3/4 with a double and a homerun; Hertel-3/4 with one RBI; McDonald ¾ with one RBI; Garcia 2/3 with one RBI.
