After a rough weekend in Midland, the Borger Bulldogs were ready to get back into the win column when they took on the Amarillo River Road Wildcats in a doubleheader at Huber Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs didn’t put together a pretty performance, which included committing a combined 12 errors in the two games. However, the home team did enough to pull out a pair of 11-10 wins to improve to 8-8-1 on the season.
Game 1: Borger 11 River Road 10
The Wildcats got off to a good start in game one by using a two RBI single in the top of the first inning to take an early 0-2 lead.
The Bulldogs quickly responded when Garrett Irwin sent the first pitch he received over the fence for a homerun followed by Acton Smith hitting a RBI single to tie the game 2-2 after the first inning of play.
After Irwin hit a RBI double in the second inning to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead, the Wildcats rallied by scoring three in the third inning to take back a two-run lead, 3-5.
Smith scored the Bulldogs’ final run in game one on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth, while the Bulldog defense did enough in the final two innings to hang on for a one-run win.
Lusk had the big bat in game one going 3-4 with a homer, double and four RBIs.
Game 2: Borger 11 River Road 10
Game two started rough for the Bulldogs, as three fielding errors helped lead to the Wildcats taking a 0-4 lead after the top half of the first inning.
Fortunately, Wildcat miscues allowed the Bulldogs to cross the plate three times on passed balls to make it a 3-4 game after the first inning.
River Road would extend their lead to 3-6 on a two- run homerun. However, the Bulldogs were able to tie the game at 6-6, thanks in part to RBI doubles by Brandon Garcia, Hunter Hertel and Lusk in the bottom half of the second.
In the top of the seventh, Hertel came in for relief on the mound for the Bulldogs and did quick work of the Wildcat bats by striking out two and getting a pop up to give Borger a shot at the final inning heroics.
Two walks and a bunt by Hertel loaded the bases for the Bulldogs, setting up Garcia to end the game with a two RBI single that brought in Lusk and Irwin to give Borger the 11-10 win.
