Gov. Greg Abbott used the recent July Fourth weekend to begin targeting British businesses to "declare independence" and relocate to Texas. The effort comes in the wake of the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union (EU).

TexasOne, a non-profit organization serving as the marketing arm for the state's economic development office, announced the effort via digital and social media aimed at executives in London. The campaign touted ads urging companies to "declare independence from high taxes" and move operations to Texas, where they will enjoy the "freedom to prosper."

The independence message dovetails with the fallout from the UK's remarkable vote to leave the EU, the so-called "Brexit" that rocked world markets and created economic uncertainty across the continent. The ads were seen on the Financial Times home page and 7,000 other London-based website, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.
