Lake Meredith eyes expanding trails

Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is seeking public input concerning a proposed system of new trails. The new trail system is being proposed along the north side of the lake. The "scoping period" began last Tuesday, and the public have until Dec. 5 to weight in on whether they would like the park to take action on building the trail system.

Any changes to national parks require an environmental assessment to make sure no natural habitats or archaeological areas are disturbed. Park officials want to make sure the public would like more trails before doing the assessment. The lake's low water level in recent years factored in to the park's plan to build the trails, which would range from 2 to 4 feet wide. If the public shows support, the assessment would begin according to park officials.

The public can weigh in by submitting comments electronically at parkplanning.nps.gov/lamr. Written comments should be sent to Superintendent, Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, P.O. Box 1460, Fritch, TX 79036. Hand-delivered comments should be taken to Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, 419 Broadway St. in Fritch.
