Tonight, the Borger Lady Bulldogs basketball team will officially open the 2011-12 season traveling to Lubbock to take on Lubbock Estacado.
Borger Lady Bulldogs Head Coach Travis Nicks enters his third season leading the Lady Bulldogs program and has seen several areas where the program has grown since taking the job.
On the areas he has seen improve, Nicks commented, “I think the overall work ethic is better and the girls understand what the expectations are for the program. The attitudes have slowly changed to where there is a competitive fire where the girls are expecting to win.”
Nicks is quick to say that positive attitude is apparent in this year’s team.
On Monday afternoon, Nicks said he expects the Lady Bulldogs’ varsity roster to consists of seniors Holly Jones and Vanessa Jones, juniors Emma Wood, Katie Sizemore, Jackie Mendez and DevAnn Jackson, sophomores Nellie Embers, Breezy Brown, and McKenzie Loftis, and freshman Tiffanie Prater.
The Lady Bulldogs’ youth movement includes just two players who were on last year’s bi-district playoff team in Wood and Embers.
Entering the season, Nicks admits the team will experience some growing pains because of their youth. However, the coach will not let that be an excuse to fall back on, saying, “I have even told several of the parents that this team will experience some ups and downs because of our inexperience at this level. However, we cannot let that be an excuse all season and at some point we are going to move beyond being a young team in order to have success, which we are capable of doing.”
Since the team has a good amount of athletic ability, Nicks said the team will try to press more on defense and he would like to see the team push the ball offensively.
Last season, Perryton won the District 1-3A title and Nicks said he feels they probably are the favorites to win it again this season. However, Nicks said the district is wide open and is confident his team should be good enough to earn another playoff spot and even challenge Perryton for the district crown.
