WTHS names top two graduates

West Texas High School has named its top graduates for the Class of 2011.
Kami Roden is this year’s valedictorian with a GPA of 102.467 and Erin Frost is this year’s salutatorian with a GPA of 99.674.
While at WTHS, Roden was active in various extracurricular activities, which included playing flute in the band, Color Guard, Dinner Theatre, J.V. Cheerleading, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, serving on Student Council and as a class officer, T.A.F.E., U.I.L. Band Solo/Ensemble, U.I.L. Calculator, U.I.L. Computer Science, U.I.L. Mathematics, and U.I.L. Number Sense.
Roden also has been active in volunteer service, working as a Borger Healthcare Center Volunteer (NHS) helping with visitation and gifts; helping with local church donations of clothing and canned food, helping with local school donations of toys and canned food, serving as a Special Olympics volunteer, and working with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Benefit as part of the NHS.
She served as a volunteer trainer/choreographer for WTHS’s 2011 Color Guard tryouts and was involved in a weekly United Way donation.
Honors Roden has received include the annual Top Scholastic Average, Dinner Theatre: All-Star Cast; Dinner Theatre: Honorable-Mention Cast; WTHS Band (Class of 2011): Outstanding Musician; U.I.L. Calculator: Individual Regional Qualifier; U.I.L. Number Sense: Member of Regional Qualifying Team; and U.I.L. State Qualifying Band Ensemble.
She has received the B. Ronald Fortner’s President’s Honor Scholarship, the High Plains A&M Club Scholarship, the Pantex Federal Credit Union Scholarship, the R.C. and Agnes Johnson Scholarship, the West Texas Elementary Faculty Scholarship, and the WTHS Band Booster Scholarship.
Roden said she plans to pursue a degree in specialized nursing. Though she is not yet certain of which college she will attend, she hopes to enroll at Texas A&M University this fall. She is the daughter of David and Janet Roden.
While at WTHS, Frost also has been involved in various extracurricular activities, which include four years in the WTHS band (Color Guard (Captain), 1st Division Area Solo and Ensemble, John Phillip Sousa Award); WTHS volleyball (1st team All-District, Academic All-District, Academic All-State, District MVP, Golden Spread All-Star Volleyball Team); basketball (Academic All-District), softball (Academic All-District, All-District Honorable Mention, Academic All-State), track (Spring Academic Award), tennis (Spring Academic Award), and UIL academics (regional qualifier in headline writing).
She also was named Miss Comanche and Who’s Who, participated in T.A.F.E. (President) and student council, and was a co-recipient of the Fighting Lady Comanche Award for WT Athletics.
Frost’s volunteer and community activities include involvement in her church youth group, Special Olympics Track Meet Volunteer, NHS Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraising, Stinnett Celebration Sand Volleyball Tournament, and Stinnett Celebration Colorguard Fundraising Booth.
Frost has received the H&H Federal Credit Union Scholarship, the Texas Cattlewomen’s Association Scholarship, Panhandle Area Association of School Board and PSPCISD Board Scholarship, WTHS Band Booster Scholarship, and WTHS Faculty Scholarship.
Frost plans to attend Clarendon College, where she will begin her studies as an education major and play on the volleyball team. She plans to attend West Texas A&M University and continue playing volleyball after completing her associate’s degree at Clarendon College. She plans to become a special education teacher and volleyball coach.
She is the daughter of John and Christine Frost of Stinnett.
Graduation ceremonies are set for 7 p.m. Friday, May 27, in the West Texas High School field house.
