Wind causes widespread damage across Borger

June 28, 2013

The National Weather Service in Amarillo is en route to Borger today to study the damage caused by last night's storm to examine the possibilities of straight-line winds or micro-burst phenomena. Micro-bursts, which are almost impossible to predict, can be as destructive as a small tornado.
There are scenes of heavy damage across Borger. At 10th and Cedar the metal roof of Kar Korner collapsed, damaging vehicles. Numerous reports of damage to carports and windows blown out of houses have been received. Xcel Energy reported several broken utility poles. The wind indicator at the Hutchinson County Airport recorded a wind gust of 94mph.
Danny Richards, Hutchinson County Fire Marshall, called the storm “exceptionally destructive,” but expressed relief saying that “we feel real fortunate that we haven't got any reports of injuries ... from a storm like this.”
More details in tomorrow's paper.
