Wichita spoils the Sox first game with 5-3 defeat

May 13, 2011

AMARILLO, TX – The inaugural game of the Amarillo Sox was a close one, even causing extra innings, but the Wichita Wingnuts spoiled the festivities with a 5-3 defeat of the Sox on Thursday night in front of 3,042 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium
Sox reliever Tyler Pearson (0-1) got the loss, allowing the two go-ahead runs in the 10th inning. Wingnuts reliever Cephas Howard (1-0) got the win, striking out the only batter he faced. Wichita closer Josh Dew retired all three batters he faced in the 10th for the save.
Wichita got on the board early as Josh Horn walked and went to second on a Ryan Patterson single. Following a double steal, a Jorge Cortes strikeout and a Juan Richardson walk to load the bases, Jorge Delgado reached on an error to score both Horn and Patterson. Josh Workman hit an RBI groundout to bring home Cortes for a 3-0 lead.
The Sox got back into the game in the third as Kevin Butler was hit by a pitch and went to second on a Jason White single. Fehlandt Lentini singled to score Butler, while Matthew Tucker singled to score White for a one-run deficit. Amarillo tied the game in the fourth as Chris Nash doubled and scored on an Adam De La Garza double to tie the game 3-3.
Though both teams had their chances, neither offense could score and caused the game to go into extra innings.
The Wingnuts took the lead in the 10th as Horn singled to lead off and went to third on a two base error on a Patterson bunt. Following an intentional walk to Cortes, Richardson singled to score Horn and Patterson for a two-run lead.
The Sox could not put a runner on in the bottom of the 10th for a 5-3 defeat.
With the loss, the Sox fall to 0-1 while the Wingnuts improve to 1-0.
