The Sanford-Fritch Eagles played Wheeler, Tuesday night and lost a close thriller in OT.
It took the first two quarters to get the Eagles rolling, as too many turnovers and missed shots plagued the Eagles. This kept them on the short end trailing after the first quarter, 9-15.
Fast paced Wheeler were a tough matchup to manage and Wheeler continued in the lead 13-27.
However, the Eagles came soaring in the last two quarters.
The Eagles use a 16-3 run to almost even the score 29-30. Big buckets from Colton Valle, who led all scorers with 18. Some old football connections were reinvented after a long pass from Chris Bryan to Valle for a beautiful, exciting score. This tied the game for one of five total times in last quarter of play.
A big steal and assist from Valle to Junior Ryan Melton made it a 33-33 tie.
A few costly turnovers by Wheeler gave Sanford-Fritch the opportunity to score and move ahead 39-35 with 2:16 left on clock.
Continued turnovers and back and forth scoring by both teams again tied the ball game at 42-42. Some free throws couldn’t fall for sophomore Ryan Blakely and game ended tied up at 42.
In OT, Sanford-Frtich won the tip off, but Wheeler would be the only team to score and took the win in the thriller 48-42.
Eagles travel to Spearman for district opener on Friday.
