West Texas Lady Comanches fall to McLean, end regular season tied with Booker for third

April 22, 2011

The West Texas Lady Comanches hosted a tough McLean Lady Tiger team in the wind yesterday. The Tribe battled throughout the game against a pitcher who throws 65 mph, and also throws a nasty curve. They lost a heartbreaker after McLean scored the go ahead runs in the top of the sixth, 6-4.
McLean scored one run in the top of the first inning when WT chose to intentionally walk their pitcher, who is also a mean hitter. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Abby Summers got on base with a single to right field. A hesitation on an infield ground ball allowed Sarah Kelly to get on base, then Abbey Rios was the recipient of a rare base on balls. Taylor Kirksey hit into the outfield for an RBI to get WT on the board. A sacrifice hit by Danielle Heater scored another run. Heater was called out on an infield fly rule that was questionable. (The ball clearly hit in the outfield and no infielder attempted to field the ball.) When the inning was over, WT led 2-1.
A fielding error by the Tribe infield allowed the Lady Tigers to tie the game in the top of the fifth. However, the Lady Comanches had some confidence after the past inning, and Devin DeLapp and Summers both got on board. Both girls also crossed the plate and the Tribe was back on top after five innings, 4-2.
Two more errors by West Texas in the sixth gave McLean the opening they needed to retake the lead 5-4. The Lady Comanches went three up and three down in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Tigers added another run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead with WT having three outs to get the job done. All three batters struck out to end the game.
In spite of the loss, freshman Danielle Heater had a stellar performance. She struck out 14 hitters in seven innings and allowed just two earned runs. Kirksey, Heater, and Sarah Kelly all had RBIs for WT.
The loss ends the regular season for the Lady Comanches in a tie with the Booker Lady Kiowas for third. The two teams will meet Monday in Pampa to see who will go on to post season play. McLean and Clarendon are tied for first, so they will play Tuesday for the District Title.
