West Texas High Comanches continue their tough district gauntlet hosting Sunray

October 20, 2011

On Friday night. the West Texas High Comanches will play in their final home game for the 2011 season when they host the undefeated Sunray Bobcats in a key District 1-1A battle.
Last Friday evening, the Comanches suffered just their second loss of the season when they fell 48-14 to the Canadian Wildcats.
The Comanches’ offense continued to move the ball on the ground, racking up over 230 rushing yards. But, the Comanches’ defense just could not find an answer on how to slow down the Wildcats’ spread attack, which racked up 533 yards of total offense and built up a big lead by halftime.
Despite the loss to Canadian, the Comanches are still in control of their own playoff lives and can take a big step in trying to clinch one of the playoff berths, if they can defeat the Bobcats at home tomorrow evening.
The Bobcats enter Friday night as one of the surprise stories in the Texas Panhandle this season in owning a perfect 7-0 record, that includes a 20-14 double overtime win over Canadian, in Kurt Huberthur’s first year as the Bobcats’ Head Football Coach.
The Bobcats have an explosive offense that has averaged 42 points per game. The Bobcats are led by one of the better quarterbacks in the Texas Panhandle in Talon Dooley and a pair of good running backs in senior Julian Celestial and junior Christian Axelson.
Anything can happen and Boys Ranch could still throw a kink in the playoff picture. But at this point, the race for the three district playoff spots appears to be a battle between West Texas High, Canadian, Stratford and Sunray. As the regular season continues to wind down, each head-to-head win a team can have over the other will go a long way in clearing up the playoff picture for a team or two.
Since that is that case, a win at home tomorrow night could go a long way in helping the Comanches get back into the playoffs for the second year in a row. But a loss will cause a lot to be at stake when they travel to Stratford for the regular season finale on November 4th.
In recent years, the West Texas and Sunray game has been one of the better games of the season in the Texas Panhandle and the pieces are in place for it to be the case once again on Friday night.
Kickoff for the Bobcats and Comanches is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Stinnett.
