The West Texas Comanches hosted the Claude Mustangs Tuesday afternoon. The last time the two met, it was in 40 mph winds and dirt. The weather was perfect and the Comanches dealt the Mustangs their second loss to WT this year, 12-5. The Comanches are still alone in second place in the District standings.
The Tribe put a couple of runners on base in the bottom of the first, but left them stranded. Claude sent seven hitters to the plate in the first two innings and one got on with a fielding error, but the Comanches took care of business and left him on base.
WT scored six runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead. It could have been worse for the Mustangs, because they had the bases loaded when the inning ended. Claude went three up and three down in the top of the third. West Texas added one more run after a fielding error by the Stangs, and left two on base. The score was 7-0 Comanches after three innings.
The Mustangs finally got a hit in the top of the fourth, and they got their first run on the scoreboard. The Tribe ended the inning on a 4-6-3 double play. West Texas put another runner across home in the bottom of the fourth, and had two men left on base. They held a comfortable 8-1 lead after four.
Claude posted one run after the fifth. The Tribe answered with two more runs of their own and led 10-2 after five. The top of the sixth was the most productive for the Mustangs when they scored three runs. Two runs were off a fielding error. Claude now trailed 10-5 with WT coming to bat. The Comanches added two more runs to their total to take a 12-5 lead into the top of the seventh inning.
The Mustangs had two runners on base with one out and were hoping to cut into the WT lead and tie the game, but it didn’t happen. The Tribe did their job to end the inning and the game and post another District win.
Senior Logan Hoff started on the mound for WT. He pitched six innings with four strike outs, and allowed five runs. Big Ty Lay closed the game in the seventh. He had two strike outs and allowed no runs.
Carlos Juarez had a good game day with his bat going 4-4. He had three base hits, was walked, and had an RBI. Lay got on base 4-5 times he was at bat. He hit a double, a single, was walked, and got hit by a pitch. He also had two RBI’s.
Kyle Stroud was 4-5. He had two base hits and was walked twice. One of his hits was a sweet little bunt he ran out to first. He had an RBI. Hoff was 2-5 with a double, a base hit, and two RBIs. Terrence Bonds was 2-4 with a double, a base hit, and one RBI.
The Comanches have lost two District games, one to Follett, who sits in first place. They still have a chance to beat the Panthers.
