The West Texas Comanches opened the 2011 football season with a bang Friday night, notching a 35-6 win over former District foe Gruver Greyhounds. The Tribe did well on both sides of the ball with the offense getting 452 total yards. The defense practically shut down the Hounds, holding them to just 73 total yards of offense. Most of that came on Gruver’s lone touchdown, a 45 yard run in the fourth quarter. The score could have and should have been much worse, but the Comanches had three touchdowns called back on penalties.
Gruver could not find an answer to stop Senior quarterback Alex Ramirez. He ran the ball nine times for 157 yards, and was almost impossible to catch once he got in the open field. Senior running back Chase Elliott had 25 carries for 166 yards, 138 of them came in the second half. Elliott was also hard to stop once he got past the line of scrimmage. Ramirez scored twice on runs of 25 and 48 yards, Elliott also had two touchdowns, a 2 yard and a 5 yard score. The other Comanche score was on a run for 5 yards by Senior Colin Coleman.
The Tribe drew first blood with 8:14 on the clock in the opening quarter with Ramirez’ first touchdown scamper from 25 yards out. The snap was low on the kick attempt, and Ramirez did a great job of getting around the right side of the line and diving for the two point conversion for an 8-0 lead. That was the halftime score, but the Comanche offense wasn’t asleep the rest of the half, they scored two other times, but had both called back on penalties.
