Weekend weather

December 2, 2011

Saturday’s weather will be very complex as an upper-level storm system moves right on top of, or very near the region. We will begin the day with a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow as temperatures below freezing occur.
As temperatures warm during the morning hours, we will see this mix changeover to scattered rain showers and even a possible thunderstorm. Another surge of Arctic air will blast into the region during the afternoon hours and quickly changeover the rain to snowfall.
Any snowfall accumulations will be light and may not cause travel problems. Another problem on Saturday will be the wind as southerly winds ahead of the cold front blowing at speeds averaging 10-20 mph quickly shift around to the north and increase to the 20-30 mph average range with some gusts upwards of 40-50 mph likely.
After high temperatures in the 30s, we will drop back into the 20s by the afternoon as the Arctic air surges into and through the region. Cloudy skies are likely and be careful when driving across the region!
