Walk off double puts Lady Comanches in tie for first

April 18, 2012

A walk off 2 RBI double by Taylor Kirksey in the bottom of the seventh inning, gave the West Texas Lady Comanches a 10-9 win over first place Clarendon yesterday. Erin Summers got the win for the WT on the mound. The win moves the Lady Tribe into a tie for first with the Lady Broncos. West Texas has one game left this Saturday in Booker. Clarendon has 3 games left, some are make up games due to the weather.
The Lady Comanches kept the Lady Broncos off the bases in the first inning and got two runs of their own to take a 2-0 lead. Clarendon loaded the bases in the top of the second with two outs, but Sarah Kelly caught a line drive to third to end the inning. WT went three up and three down to end the second but led 2-0.
Clarendon sent three batters to the plate and three went down. Kelly got a base hit to get on base, but was left stranded. The score was still 2-0 after three innings.
The Lady Broncos got a runner with a walk, but Natalie Franklin caught a hard hit line drive at first for an out, and the other two were infield grounders with a play at first. The Lady Comanches put their first three hitters on board with base hits to load the bases. Hailee Flaharity was next up and her ground ball was mishandled and a run scored and the bases were still loaded. Abby Rios hit safely on a fielder's choice and an RBI. Kelly was next with another base hit and 2 RBI's. WT left two on board, but now led 6-0 after four innings.
It was Clarendon's turn to hit in the gap in the top of the fifth. They scored four runs off three hits and a base on balls. WT loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but all were left stranded. The Lady Tribe still led after five, 6-4.
Devin DeLapp made a spectacular diving catch in left field that was worthy of a Sports Center top ten. The Lady Broncos scored four runs in the sixth to take the lead 8-6. The Lady Comanches put two on base with singles, but couldn't get them in. They trailed 8-6 at the end of six.
The Lady Broncos got another run after an error in the top of the seventh and took a 9-6 lead going into the bottom of the inning. Abby Summers led off getting on base with an error by the first baseman. Then, Flaharity and DeLapp loaded the bases with base hits. Erin Summers banged out a base hit into the outfield for an RBI. The next two Lady Comanches were out, but on Kelly's hit, a fielder's choice, one more run scored and the other two were moved over into scoring position on second and third. Kirksey came to the plate with two outs and the game on the line. She kept her cool and belted a sweet double into right field and two runs scored to win the game 10-9.
When asked if she was nervous going to bat with the game on the line, Kirksey replied, "Are you kidding me?! Yeah, I was nervous!" After your hit how did you feel? " I couldn't breathe!" Nice job Miss Kirksey!
WT is tied with Clarendon after yesterday's game at the top of the District. Booker and Claude are tied in second. It may take a week before the playoff picture is clear.
Kirksey had the big hit of the game with a double, but she also had a single, and 2 RBI's. Kelly had three base hits and 2 RBI's. DeLapp had 2 base hits and 2 RBI's. Cheyenne Tull had two base hits. Franklin, Summers, and Flaharity each had a base hit. Rios and Erin Summers both had RBI base hits.
