Volleyball two-a-days in full swing
There is no question football is king throughout the State of Texas. But in the Texas Panhandle, volleyball has established itself as the queen of the sports world, due to the playoff success of teams from Amarillo High, Randall, Bushland, Dumas, Hereford, Canyon, Pampa, Dalhart and our hometown Borger Lady Bulldogs.While the high school boys were busy getting two-a-days started on the football practice field this week, high school girls have been working as hard in the gym preparing for the 2011 volleyball season.Sanford-Fritch and West Texas High School will have new head coaches leading their programs this year.As part of the coaching changes at Sanford-Fritch High School, Alexa Watson takes over as the new head volleyball coach for Amber Parkhurst, who now is heading up the Lady Eagles softball team.The Lady Eagles will try to earn a playoff berth this season in a tough district which includes Bushland and Amarillo River RoadKathleen Patterson moves from an assistant coaching position at Borger High to the head coaching position at West Texas High.Patterson brings several years of experience coaching in the high school ranks where she served as the head coach at Amarillo San Jacinto, prior to her time coaching in Borger.Patterson inherits a Lady Comanches team that went undefeated in district play last season and only graduated one senior.In Borger a tough competition has taken place all week for the spots on the Lady Bulldog varsity roster. Determining who will make the cut for the varsity team has been a tough decision for Borger Head Volleyball Coach Michael Littlejohn, who said on Thursday, “Trying to narrow it down has been tough because we have a good group of young kids and several of them are fighting for the same positions.”Borger returns four players from last year’s regional semi-final squad.All three county schools will officially get the season underway next week with Borger traveling to Canyon on Tuesday to take part in a triangular with Bushland and Canyon starting at 5:00 p.m. On Monday. Sanford-Fritch will compete in a triangular against Amarillo San Jacinto and Amarillo Caprock starting at 6:00 p.m. and West Texas High will open the season on Monday at Amarillo Holy Cross. Time of the West Texas vs Holy Cross match was still to be determined as of Thursday afternoon.
