Viola Mae Stephens
On the evening of January 5, 2013 surrounded by her loving family, Viola Mae Stephens slipped peacefully into the arms of her loving God, where she was joyfully reunited with friends, family and her husband of 40 years, Dr. Walton Glen Stephens.Viola was born on October 17, 1907 in Burlington, KS to Charles and Stella Bunton. She is preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Morris, brothers Leo Bunton and Wayne Bunton. Viola graduated high school and attended junior college in Emporia, KS. She moved to Borger to live with her sister in the late 1920’s and worked at the Western Union office located in the Black Hotel. Dr. Stephens had his office across from the Black Hotel. At the end of the day, Dr. Stephens would return to his room in the hotel and there is where he met Viola. They were married on November 22, 1934. They lived at the corner of Roosevelt and McGee for over 60 years. Viola was very involved in civic organizations and was a charter member of The 20th Century Club where she also served as president in 1949 and was member for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Rotary Anns, Top of Texas Medical Society, The Collectors Club, Quendecum Club and a patron of The Music Club. Viola was very instrumental in forming the Hutchinson County Library. After her husband’s death in 1973, Viola continued to stay busy with numerous bridge groups, parties at her home and making her famous fudge. She was a member of First Baptist Church and loved her friends in Sunday School and worked in Vacation Bible School every year until she left Borger when she was 90 years old. She also took some courses at Frank Phillips College to keep her mind sharp.In 1997 Viola moved to Jacksonville Florida to be closer to her son. In 2010, after a fall, Viola moved back to Texas to live with her daughter.Viola leaves behind a legacy of grace and love to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Donald Glen Stephens (BHS class of 1955) and wife Randy of Jacksonville, FL and their children Nicolle Cundiff (husband David) of Lynchburg, VA, Helen Plaugher (husband Dave) of Jacksonville, FL and Janet Stegner (husband Phillip) of San Francisco, CA and her daughter, Susan Stephens Bolton (BHS class of 1964) and husband Louis of Grand Prairie, TX and their children Wyndee Kunesh (husband Mark) of Waco, TX and Bill Clark (wife Kristin) of Mooresville, NC. She also has 8 great grandchildren.Visitation will be Friday, January 11, 2013 from 6:00PM to 7:30PM at Brown Funeral Directors Chapel Of The Fountains, in Borger, TX. Services will be held at Brown Funeral Directors Chapel of the Fountains in Borger, TX on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11:00AM with Pastor Steve Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery in Borger, TX.
