A special film is coming to the Morley Theatre this Friday for a special limited edition showing.
“The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry” will be shown at the Morley Theatre at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, 2010. The showing is being sponsored by First Baptist Church of Borger.
The film is scheduled to be shown through at least next Thursday, March 4. However, Matt Cox, who is the minister of worship and media at FBC, has said if the response is strong enough, the theater will keep it running through March 11.
The film was originally released to theaters on Sept. 18, 2009. It was directed by Rich Christiano, with the majority of being filmed in Brockport, N.Y., beginning in August of 2007.
The world premiere of the film took place at the Merrimack Valley Christian Film Festival.
The title character of the film is played by Gavin MacLeod, who is known for his roles in “The Love Boat” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”
The plot of the film centers around 12-year-old friends Dustin, Albert, and Mark, who are looking for some summer fun in 1970.
Dustin likes a young lady named Tanya and wants to ask her out, but is battling nerves because he has never asked anyone out before.
The main obstacles in his path to doing so is Nick, who is considered the town bully and also likes Tanya.
Dustin begins mowing the lawn of 75-year-old Jonathan Sperry, who is a man he has seen at church, and the two build a friendship. Events that occur over the rest of the summer change the lives of Dustin and his friends forever.
Other actors in the film include Jansen Panettiere as Dustin, Robert Guillaume as Mr. Barnes, Frankie Ryan Manriquez as Albert, and Bailey Garno as Tanya.
The soundtrack of the film, which was composed by Jasper Randall, won Best Original Score in the 2009 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival.
The film has received excellent reception since its release, particularly from actor Kirk Cameron.
“The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry moved me with its message of eternity and how one faithful man can make a difference in the lives of many,” he said. “I recommend this inspiring movie for any family to watch together.”
Cox said tickets for the special showing of the film will be discounted for those wishing to attend. Tickets will be available the night of the film, but he also said vouchers are being sold by FBC that will guarantee people spots and will also give them a better idea of how many to expect. The vouchers can be picked up there.
