One of Amarillo’s well-known weathermen will be the special guest at the Rotary Club meeting this Tuesday.
“Doppler” Dave Oliver, chief meteorologist for NewsChannel10, will be the speaker at the upcoming meeting of the Borger Rotary Club, scheduled for 12 p.m. Feb. 9, 2010, at Dake’s Restaurant and Catering.
Oliver was born in Wichita, Kan., and took an interest in weather as a child. After spending his early years in central Oklahoma and becoming fascinated with thunderstorms and tornadoes, his family moved to the Texas coast for his middle and high school years.
Living near the city of Corpus Christi, Oliver developed an interest in waterspouts. Toward the end of high school, he decided to pursue meteorology as a career. He attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where he continued to develop a passion for studying weather and storms.
While at OU, he met his wife Carol, and they married just days after his college graduation. Oliver’s first television job was in Corpus Christi in late 1983, followed by a period as chief meteorologist at a station in Victoria from 1984-86.
In late 1986, he was contacted and offered a job at KFDA-TV and joined the team immediately. He has been the chief meteorologist at NewsChannel10 since 1987.
While not working, Oliver enjoys chasing storms, fishing, camping, lifting weights and exercising, spending time with his family, eating ice cream, and leading a men’s Bible study.
He is active in church and spends a lot of time in schools and giving presentations. Oliver said God has blessed him in a mighty way by allowing him to do what he loves to do in this wonderful part of the world.
“We have the best and most fascinating weather in the country and the people here are so warm and friendly,” he said. “This has been such a rewarding home and God has shown me this is right where he wants me to be.”
