Crime Stoppers seeking assistance with arson investigation
Friday, July 03 2009

Crime Stoppers of Hutchinson County and the Borger Police Department are seeking assistance from anyone who may have information regarding an arson investigation at the Fairlanes Square Apartments.

According to Lt. Jason Whisler with the Borger Fire Marshal's Office, on June 23, 2009, a late night fire erupted in an unoccupied building at Fairlanes Square Apartments, located at 3111 Fairlanes Blvd. in Borger. There were a total of eight apartments in the complex, Whisler said, but none were occupied at the time. Firefighters diligently worked to suppress the flames from spreading to the attached apartment upstairs, he said. While firefighters were on the second story of the building, the concrete pad they were standing on collapsed under the strain of the fire, resulting in one firefighter falling through to the floor and injuring his leg. The end result, Whisler said, was one fireman injured and all eight apartments being completely destroyed, resulting in a loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
After the incident, Whisler said that an extensive investigation of the scene was performed. During the investigation, officials discovered some evidence that has led them to rule the fire as incendiary. As such, it has now become an active Arson investigation, he said.
There are currently several suspects, however, officials have encountered resistance from the compelling witnesses to come forward to provide information regarding the case, Whisler said.
Investigators are now requesting assistance from Crime Stoppers to help compensate witnesses that may be able to provide any useful information in this case. All tips left with Crime Stoppers are anonymous, and any information that could lead to the arrest and/or conviction of the responsible parties could result in a cash reward of up to $1,000. Anyone with any information regarding the arson investigation at Fairlanes Square Apartments is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 806-274-6371.
