By Brooke Huff Reporter According to Rozanna Pfeiffer with Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, lake levels have risen up to two feet over the past eight days.
On July 8, 2008, the National Park Service registered Lake Meredith at its lowest level at 45.25 feet. As of yesterday, due to the recent rains over the past week, the lake had risen over seven feet to 52.22 feet. Park officials suspect that it will continue to rise slightly over the next few days as rain run-off continues to make its way to the lake. Pfeiffer said that because they are reaching the end of the season, she doesn’t expect the rise in water levels to cause many changes in activities on the lake. The big emphasis right now, she said, is on hunting. The lake has not received enough rain yet to allow them to open another boat ramp, she said. The lake has a long way to go, Pfeiffer said, before they will be able to open an additional ramp. For most of the summer, due to the low water levels, visitors to Lake Meredith were only able to use the boat ramp at the Marina. Heavy rainfall late in the summer, however, made it possible for the park to open a second ramp at Fritch Fortress after working to extend it. Park officials, Pfeiffer said, continue to hold out hope that the rains will continue.
