A couple of bait suggestions to try out at Lake Meredith

Hello fishermen, I hope everyone had a good weekend and got to go out and catch a few fish. The fishing seems to be picking up a bit at lake Meredith with some nice catches of both small mouths and black bass.
The smallies are still hitting good at night and have been feeding on the rising moon.  The black bass are hitting blue flek Berkely power worms and white buzz baits later in the evenings. Fish the shallow water where ever you can find a drop off of some kind.
The  edge of the moss or some of the old creek ledges lile Bugby and North Canyon. The same applies for the bass over at Greenbelt. There you need to fish the grass edges or the places where  the creeks are near the shore and you can find a few patches of gravel.
.For night  fishing a jig a brown hair jig with a number eleven black pork frog is my favorite jig this of year for small mouth. For a spinner bait I am still throwing the half ounce black  Go- Getter spinner bait with a gold number five Colorado blade. I also kie to use a four inch black worm with a red curled tail trailer on the spinner bait at night.
I seldom fish a jig or spinner bait right out of the package with out type of modification. For a rubber or hair jig I will usually start by trimming the weed guard. I cut it off several strands of the fiber guard thinning it a bit. I then cut the length off at an angle back just towards the hooks point but I leave it long enough where it will still protect the point of the hook from some hang ups. I make my own jigs so I have the option of using the very best and sharpest hooks.  Some of the off the shelf brand jigs will need to be sharpened before you fish them.
A couple other modification I make to my jigs would be the length of the skirt material. Most bass jigs are skirted with living rubber skirts. Most of the better quality jigs will come with a longer skirt. This doesn't mean you want to fish it that way right out of the package. I will usually cut my jig skirt off about a fingers width below the bend in my hook. Then if I'm fishing deeper water I may pull a few strands of the rubber skirt out to allow the bait to fall faster to get it to the bottom quicker.
The opposite applies if I want a slower fall rate for my bait.  I fish a three eights ounce jig most of the time but I always have a selection of quarter and half ounce for when the conditions require a  different weight bait. Remember cold water bass will want a slower fall  rate while bass in warmer water will hit a faster falling bait better as there strikes then are more a reaction strike that can be triggered by the faster falling bait.  Your pork or rubber trailer can be changed to assist in the fall rate the fish seem to be wanting.
Now for my spinner baits and buzz baits.  While there isn't as many modifications to make to a spinner or buzz bait other than changing skirts, blades and trailers one thing I always add is my trailer hook. The reason for this is that fish striking at night are keying in on your bait by sound and they are also using their lateral line to locate and strike biats.  The trailer hook will increase the chances of a good hook up at least fifty percent. Now many spinner bait fishermen use the rubber tubing that comes with packaged trailer hooks by sliding the rubber over the eye of their trailer hook . They then running the main hook through the rubber and eye of the trailer hook  which holds the hook in place and doesn't allow it and movement.
My preferance in rigging a trailer hook is to hang the eye of the trailer hook over the baits hook and then I slide the small rubber keeper over the  hook where it keeps the trailer hook on yes lets is swing freely off the main hook. This allows the hook to swing freely and be deflected off obstructions and cover where it would hang if it was held in a set position. I fish the trailer hook this way on all my spinner baits and buzz baits.
Sometimes I will add a plastic trailer to my spinner baits and buzz baits but not until  after the middle of June. Before then I prefer to fish the spinner baits them with out the trailer. Trailers cause lift on your baits and early in the year I want my spinner baits to be able to drop easily and helicopter down with the blades spinning. The buzz baits can be fished much slower when needed with the addition of a trailer of some kind. Usually a twist tailed worm or grub in white or chartreuse.
I hope everyone has a great week. Keep what you will eat and release the rest to fight again.
