By MICHELLE BERRY REPORTER Quilt month at Hutchinson County Historical Museum has certainly been a busy month.
During the month of July annually, the museum holds a quilt show and holds various activities pertaining to the art of quilting. Fifty-seven men and women attended the awards presentation for the 27th annual quilt show at Hutchinson County Museum and to hear five women from Pampa give a presentation on Round Robin Quilting. Liza Harrison, Brenda Tucker, Janie VanZandt, Karol Herbey, and Connie Parks showed some of their quilts and explained how they do their round robin. One person completes a block and others work around that one, each adding some of their own personality to the quilt. “The quilts ranged from seasonal to oriental and more,” Judy Mihm, museum quilt show chairman, said. “The quilts also varied greatly in sizes. When asked if there were any rules, they said not usually, but sometimes size became a factor.” On Sunday, July 27, 2008, Carol Wade of Pampa will speak on Labels with Pizzazz. Mrs. Wade began sewing at an early age and started using a sewing machine at the age of 14. In December of 1972, she received a bachelor of science degree in clothing and textile design from Texas Tech University. She went to work in January of 1973 for Doty Dan Inc. in Lamesa, designing children’s clothing. She traveled to New York fabric houses and the Dallas market. After marriage, Wade moved about every five years with her husband and worked in accounting. After she settled in Pampa, she taught at the alternative high school and went to West Texas A&M University, receiving her teaching certificate in special education. She was employed by Pampa High School and has taught algebra, geometry, math of money, TAKS math, economics and introduction to business. In 2000, she talked her husband Bill into buying them a long-arm quilting machine. She made and completed her first quilt in early 2000. Wade began working part-time at Sands Fabrics in Pampa and started teaching classes in 2002. Mihm encourages the public to come out for Wade’s presentation this Sunday. “We want to encourage you to come and hear this program,” she said. She also said that time is running out for those who would like to have a chance of winning a beautiful quilt. Tickets are only $1 each.
