By MICHELLE BERRY REPORTER The Borger ISD board of trustees has awarded its final elementary school package, and it pertains to new playground equipment.
During a special meeting held Wednesday, the board voted to award a bid for the equipment to Recreation Service Corporation in the amount of $86,739. Allan Wolf of Parkhill, Smith, and Cooper, the firm aiding the district in its facility improvements, said the district already has quite a bit of equipment that is fairly new . One piece has been stored during the construction process. He said existing equipment is being relocated and a new circuit has been purchased, which includes accessible play panels for the ground. The surfacing is woodchips, similar to what the district already has, which will cost around $28,800. Wolf said an under drain system is being put under some of the equipment. It will get water out of the area quicker and keeps the ground from becoming compact, making for a softer cushion in case of children falling from the equipment. The cost for the system will be $8,900. The water will go out west towards the track. He said there were a couple of other people interested in bidding on the project, but didn’t quite get their bids in on time. In the budget, Wolf said there was still a little over $62,000 in the elementary school budget that could go towards the cost of the equipment. He said there were changes in doing the greenhouse and other items, a line item of $20,000 previously. He said the budget has been balanced out in such a way that there is enough money to cover the playground costs. Superintendent Cliff Stephens asked if this is the same company that aided the district in moving the current equipment, and Wolf said that it was. He said there is one of the monkey bar circuits that is not wide enough and is in need of woodchips, but the district will be getting a credit close to $3,000 for not having to move the equipment. Wolf said a demand savings grant was filed with Xcel Energy which will be about $17,000, and the district’s initial application was approved. All that has to be done now is for the representatives to come and check out what is taking place. He said the south wing has not been filed yet, which could possibly bring in another $6,000 or $7,000 for the district due to a deduction the district had on the lighting. He said there are some miscellaneous fees totaling $3,100 that can be moved to cover overage on the playground equipment, along with some money left over from material testing and reimbursable expenses Wolf said most of the equipment that will be installed at the new playground is existing equipment, and should be in before school starts. He said there may be a couple of weeks where not all the playground equipment is installed. |
