City council approves tourism contracts |

The City of Borger is continuing to do its part to promote tourism.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Borger City Council approved tourism service contracts for the Friends of the Hutchinson County Historical Museum, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Tri-City Community Concert Association.
City Manager Wanda Klause said the City of Borger has had long standing contracts with all three of the organizations for tourism-related services, and all of these contracts are annual and expired on March 31, 2008.
Each of the organizations presented their annual report and proposed budget to the council at the April 15 meeting of the council.
“The proposed contracts are almost identical to the respective contracts previously approved by the council,” Klause said.
There are some minor exceptions in the contracts. An increase from 2.9 to five percent on the Tri-City Community Concert Association was approved, along with an increase from 5.8 to six percent on the Friends of the Hutchinson County Museum contract.
A reduction took place in the Chamber of Commerce, from 48.6 to 48 percent, and a maximum cap of $100,000 on the contract.
In terms of the financial impact, Klause said the budgeted revenue for the hotel/motel fund was $160,500. As of April 28, the city has collected $111,025, and is anticipating revenues of $190,000 in this budget year.
Council member Charles Gillingham said all of the organizations were doing a great job in promoting tourism for the City of Borger and were all worthy of receiving the hotel/motel tax money. However, due to his personal involvement with each organization, he chose to abstain from action on the approval of the contracts.
Mayor Pro-Tem Garrett Spradling said he was pleased with the increase in funds for the Tri-City Community Concert Association, as it is moving into its 60th anniversary year.
In the report presented on the association to the council on April 15, chairman Judy Flanders said the association was anticipating an increase in artists’ fees.
In other business, the council approved action on a recommendation from the Building Standards Commission to demolish structures at two different addresses, which are 326 A. Coble, Lot 30-32, Block 50, Original Townsite; and 713 McPherson, Lot 9, Block 11, Rock Creek.
The address 803 Monroe (rear), Lot 7-8, Block 46, Isom was also turned in as a recommendation from the commission. However, Director of Planning and Zoning Larry Mullenix said an Operation Facelift request came in on that property, so the council decided to table action on the item until it receives the Operation Facelift request.
Council members attending the meeting were Gillingham, Spradling, council members Leon DeWeese and Bubba Dickson, and Mayor Jeff Brain.
