Veteran Appreciation Banquet to be held soon

October 22, 2012

The Elks Lodge, along with the American Legion, VFW, Vietnam Veterans and all Auxiliaries, are getting ready to host the seventh annual Veteran Appreciation Banquet.
Every Wednesday night at 7 P.M., the Borger Elks hold meetings to plan and organize the night’s events such as preparing all decorations, food preparation, ceremonies, finances, etc. This years banquet will be held on Nov. 3, 2012. The banquet is a way to celebrate all veterans of America. Veterans and their spouses are strongly encouraged to attend. The evening has a lot in store for our veterans, such as door prizes, awarded tokens, and awards for the oldest and youngest attending veterans. Like last year, there will be a brisket dinner at 7 p.m. right after opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. and social hour at 5 p.m.
During opening ceremonies, professional bagpipe player Larry Fowler and thirteen-year-old Jordan Langhenning of Panhandle will play songs such as “Amazing Grace” and “America the Beautiful”. There will also be a special speaker all the way from Portland, Ore., Scott King. King is a former Marine and the founder of Remember the Wounded Ride.
RTWR is nonprofit organization with a mission to help make life better for our combat wounded men and women and their families; educate the public as to the effects of war on the American family and honor the injured and their families of America's wars.
King is also known for his epic 14,000 mile solo bicycle ride to raise awareness of the needs of combat veterans and their families. King's ride took two years (April to October 2010 and May to Sept 2012) to complete and covered the forty-eight contiguous states.
During his ride, King stopped at over 260 Elks Lodges and several other veterans' organizations to interview many combat veteran members for the story of their experiences in combat. The stories have been collected for a series of books that is aimed to educate the public as to the real-life difficulties and trials faced by the men and women of our military in the defense of our nation.
So come hear King speak about his adventures, eat a great dinner and honor veterans on Nov. 3 at the Veterans Appreciation Dinner at 5 p.m.
