UPDATE: Major crash injures several; at least one dead

December 18, 2013

Several people were injured Wednesday night in two separate automobile accidents on State Highway 136 between Fritch and Borger.

According to the DPS, at around 6:00 p.m. a Ford Ranger pickup with two occupants heading East on 136 attempted to make a left hand turn into a private driveway, crossing the oncoming lane. The truck was then struck by a second Chevrolet pickup moving westbound with five occupants.

All five people in the Chevrolet were transported for medical attention, and one person from the Ford Ranger was transported. At least one person was airlifted off of the site with serious injuries and two were listed in critical condition, according to DPS officials on scene.

According to an eyewitness, within seconds of the crash a large Ford pickup approached the accident scene from the west at a high rate of speed, striking one car that was pulling into the turning lane to stop and one more vehicle that had attempted to avoid the first crash.

“It was an absolute disaster,” said the witness, “I’ve never seen such a thing in person.”

Six more people were transported for medical attention from the second collision but no serious injuries among them.

No fatalities have been reported and individual statuses are not available but twelve people total, including children, were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to life threatening.

The accidents are still under investigation.

UPDATE: At 10:23 a.m. Thursday morning, DPS Trooper Chris Ray has confirmed that one person has died as a result of Wednesday evening's accidents.
