The Borger Fire Department is doing its part to help the family of a firefighter who recently passed away after suffering extensive injuries in the line of duty.
The BFD would like to give it condolences to the family of Elias Jaquez, 49. His family consists of his loving wife Josephine Jaquez and four daughters. Jacquez was a firefighter from Cactus. His death was caused by fighting a fire in Moore county that occurred on Saturday, April 9, 2011. He suffered third degree burns that covered 60 percent of his body. He died Monday April 20, 2011. The Borger firefighters wanted to send their regards to the family by writing a letter sent in by Joshua Brown, a firefighter for Borger Fire Department that states:
“In the fire service there is a code of brotherhood, a way of life if you will. It is based on the precept that when one member of our family hurts, we all hurt! This family is devastated. The people of Borger are some of the best when it living out “brotherhood”. We’ve seen this community rally around so many great causes and this one is no different.
Borger Professional Firefighter Union IAFF Local 3983 is asking for your help as we “fill the boot” over the next week in an effort to raise money for the Jaquez family. Also in an effort to raise money, Eric Gutierrez, Borger firefighter and owner of Powerhouse Screen Printing has donated firefighter memorial t-shirts and will have them available for purchase at the fire station and his business located on 10th street. As you know there are going to be many expenses as a result of this tragedy. Unfortunately volunteer departments don’t have tremendous resources when it comes to financially assisting the families of fallen firefighters. Not only has the Jaquez family lost a hero, a husband and a father the have also lost an additional wage earner and provider.
Josephine said in an earlier interview, “I hope and pray to Jesus that he will give him the opportunity to be back out there”. While it’s true that Elias Jaquez will never physically be “out there” fighting fire, the impact he made on those around him and the memories of his courage will forever be embodied in those he served along side of, including his wife Josephine. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. Elias gave it all and for this we say thank you friend!! God Bless You.”
