Over the weekend, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen baseball team opened WJCAC play taking on the New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds.
The T-Birds are known for having solid pitching and that was evident in the series, as the Plainsmen were held to four runs over four games with the T-Birds winning the series three games to one.
On Saturday, the T-Bird used 15 hits and five Plainsmen errors to get the 12-1 win in the first game of the series.
In game two, the T-Birds continued to stay hot at the plate getting a 9-2 win. Andrew Landin brought in both Plainsmen runs on a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
On Sunday’s first game, the two teams were caught in a pitching duel where both teams were limited to just three hits.
However it would be Plainsmen 6-9 lefty Brad Wieck getting the win for the Plainsmen by keeping the T-Birds from crossing home plate through seven innings of work. Nolan Hoskins would bring in the game’s lone run on a RBI hit in the third inning.
In the series finale, the Plainsmen would get another solid pitching performance from Zach Johnson. But the Plainsmen would not score a run in the game leading to the T-Birds getting the 4-0 win.
The Plainsmen start WJCAC with a 1-3 record and go to 5-13 overall
The Plainsmen will be on the road the next couple of weekends beginning on Friday when they travel for a four game series with Odessa College.
