Suspicious death classified as homicide

April 22, 2011

A suspicious death in the Keeler Heights area that is being investigated by the Borger Police Department and the Texas Rangers has now been classified as a homicide.
On Thursday, April 21, 2011, at approximately 11:14 a.m., officers from the Borger Police Department were dispatched to 120 Garrett Street in reference to an unattended death.
The call for service was called into BPD Dispatch by a citizen from Meals on Wheels that delivers food to the elderly. Once officers arrived on scene, they discovered the deceased, identified as Lois Kimbrell, 97, inside of the residence. The residence belonged to Kimbrell and it is believed at this time she resided there alone, according to Lt. Anthony Griffin of the BPD.
Upon initial investigation into the scene, circumstances led officers to believe it was a suspicious death. Detectives from the BPD’s Criminal Investigations Division were called to the scene to investigate the death further. Following the detectives’ initial investigation, it was decided to contact the Texas Rangers to assist in the investigation due to the extent of it and the need for extra manpower of an incident of this scope.
Investigators were on scene most of the evening and resumed the investigation Friday. An autopsy was scheduled and performed this morning. After further investigation and obtaining the preliminary autopsy results, the incident is now being classified and investigated as a homicide, Lt. Griffin said.
At this point and time in the investigation, the cause and manner of death is still being withheld. Motive, possible suspect (s), as well as all other leads are still being investigated and followed up on by investigators.
BPD is asking anyone that may have any information in reference to this incident to contact the department at (806) 273-0930. Upon calling, ask for the Duty Sergeant, who will then take any and all information and then disseminate the information to the investigators for further investigation and follow-up.
