SUNRAY-On Friday night, the Sunray Bobcats used three second half touchdowns to pull away for the 47-24 win over the Sanford-Fritch Eagles.
After a Colton Valle touchdown run for the Eagles at the 8:55 mark of the third quarter, the Eagles offense struggled to get much going into the second half, while the Bobcats’ running game controlled the clock.
Bobcats’ senior quarterback Talon Dooley had a big night connecting 11 of 18 passed for one touchdown and rushing for 141 yards that included a 98 yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Eagles started the game strong with an opening drive that went 65 yards. A Chris Bryan 26 yard pass to Christian Ward put the Eagles inside the Bobcat seven yard line. However, the drive stalled with the Bobcats putting up a good defensive stand to keep the Eagles out of the end zone.
Fortunately, the Eagles had better luck in their second drive going 51 yards which ended with Bryan connecting with Tate Murray for a three yard touchdown pass. On the extra point attempt, the Bobcats blocked the kick and ran it back to the end zone to make it a 6-2 score at the 9:27 mark of the first quarter.
The Bobcats used the momentum from the blocked extra point to go on an 11 play 65 yard drive for a touchdown to make it a 6-8 score after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the two teams exchanged scores twice including Bryan finding Murray for a 48 yard touchdown pass and Bryan getting a three yard rushing touchdown.
The Bobcats only had a touchdown and field goal in the second quarter. However, the Eagles found themselves down 18-19 at halftime, due to missing each of their three extra point attempts in the half.
The first play from scrimmage in the third quarter resulted in a 55 yard touchdown run by Bobcat running back Julian Celestial.
Valle’s third quarter touchdown made the score 24-26. But the Bobcats controlled the remainder of the second half to pull away for the big win.
The loss drops the Eagles to 0-2 while the Bobcats improve to 2-0.
Next week the Eagles travel to Stratford looking for their first win of the 2011 season.
