From state gold medal to Texas Tech

July 22, 2011

Earlier this week, 2011 Borger High School graduate J’Cee Pool signed a letter-of-intent to compete in track for Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Prior to heading down to Austin to compete in the state track meet in early May, Pool was still uncertain about where she would have the opportunity to compete in the discus and/or the shot put at the colleigate level.
At the time, Pool said a couple of schools had talked to her, including West Texas A&M University, but none had officially made her an offer.
After the state track meet all of that changed for Pool, thanks to her dominating the competition in the 3A Girls’ Discus, winning the gold medal with a throw of 140 feet and the silver medal in the 3A Girls’ Shot Put with a throw of 41-71/2.
Pool’s gold medal is the first in the Borger Lady Bulldog track team’s history
What also made achieving the gold medal in the discus so impressive is the fact Pool never competed in the discus in high school until her senior year.
After the success in Austin, Pool started to receive attention from several schools from around the country, including New Mexico St., Yale and Central Michigan.
However, Pool told the Amarillo Globe-News that being close to her family and being familiar with Lubbock and the school helped lead her to decide on becoming a Red Raider.
During her time at Borger High School, Pool also played on the Lady Bulldog volleyball and girls’ basketball teams.
Along with the discus and shot put, Tech coaches are wanting Pool to consider competing in the seven-event heptathlon.
