The West Texas Comanches were celebrating 25 years of fielding a football team at their Homecoming game vs the Spearman Lynx last night. WT High celebrated by sporting the jerseys of the two teams from the schools that make up the District now, Stinnett Rattlers in the first half, and the Phillips Blackhawks in the second half, while the cheerleaders wore Plemons Indians outfits. All three represent the schools that no longer exist since combining to make WT High.
The Spearman Lynx were there to spoil the Tribe’s Homecoming event, and they did just that. They took advantage of five Comanche turnovers, three fumbles and one interception, and won the game 31-14 in Stinnett. Three fumbles by the Comanches turned into Lynx scores. The Comanches had more total offensive yards, with 349, than the Lynx with 301. But the turnover column, was the game killer for the Tribe last night. Spearman was also able to shut down the WT offense with some hard hits.
The Lynx scored after their first Comanche gift, with 2:32 left in the first quarter. The kick failed and it was 6-0 at the end of one. Their second touchdown came after fumble number two. The PAT was good this time and they led 13-0 with 4:13 left in the half. One more Tribe fumble led to yet another Spearman score with 1:28 left in the half and a 19-0 score at the intermission.
Spearman opened the second half with a nice return to the WT 41 yard line to set up a quick score. Three plays later they were in the end zone again for a 25-0 lead with 10:04 in the third quarter. The third quarter ended with the Tribe still scoreless, but threatening. Chase Elliott scored on a 2 yard run and Alex Ramirez added the PAT to get WT on the board and the score was 25-7 with 11:57 left in the game.
Spearman added another six points a couple of minutes later to boost their lead to 31-7. Ramirez added one mores score for WT from inside the 2 yard line. The kick PAT failed for the final of 31-14.
Ramirez led the team in rushing yards with 103, and Chase Elliott had 65 yards. Colin Coleman also had two solid kick off returns. Defensively, Ty Lay had a solid game for the Tribe.
The loss gives WT a record of 3-1. They take to the road next week to take on Electra at Wellington.
