Lake Meredith is gearing up for its annual small-fry fishing tournament.
The tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at the Stilling Basin at Spring Canyon. All children ages six through 14 are invited, and there is no charge to participate.
The National Park Service has added a special bonus to this year's event – a new fishing dock and additional covered picnic shelters.
The schedule of events is as follows:
8:00-9:00 a.m. - Registration
9:00-11:00 a.m. - Tournament
11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. - Hot Dog Lunch
12:30-2:00 p.m. - Awards and Door Prizes
The small fry-fishing tournament is an annual event that promotes the sport of fishing while encouraging families to spend quality time together. There is no entrance fee, and youth of all income levels are able to participate. Age groups will be from 6-8 years, 9-11 years, and 12-14 years, with prizes awarded in each category. An adult must accompany the participants.
The Stilling Basin will be stocked with fish prior to the event and then closed to the general public until after the tournament. As in past years, support from local businesses and individuals has allowed the Small-Fry Fishing Tournament Association to put on the tournament with no cost to the children.
Those wanting to volunteer the day of the tournament should contact Win Bishop at 857-2451. For more information on the tournament or directions to the Stilling Basin, contact Lake Meredith National Recreation Area headquarters at 857-3151.
