On Friday evening, the Borger Bulldogs were not able to overcome a slow start and foul trouble in their 62-51 loss to the Dumas Demons in non-district action at Tex Hanna Gym.
The game started positive for Borger with a three pointer by Grant Boren to made it a 3-3 score at the 7:10 mark of the first period. However, the Bulldogs struggled to get anything going offensively the remainder of the first period. The Bulldogs first period woes also included the team quickly getting in foul trouble, which sent the Demons to the free throw early and often, and leading Dumas to build a 22-7 lead going into the second period.
The Bulldogs started to rally in the second period with Daniel Salinas and Tyrell Haynes combining for 12 points near the basket along with Boren, Cameron Maxwell, and Dillon Carrillo hitting three pointers to pull the Bulldogs back to within seven points at halftime, 35-28.
In the third period, Salinas continued to establish himself as a force in the paint by scoring six points in the period.
The two teams went back and forth before the Bulldogs were able to pull to within four points, 45-41, when Haynes kicked the ball out to an open Carrillo for a three pointer.
But, the Demons ended the third period nailing a three to make it a 48-41 score into the fourth period.
In the fourth period, foul trouble once again started to plague the Bulldogs leading to the Demons connecting on 10 of 20 free throws in the final eight minutes. In contrast, the Bulldogs only got to the free throw line seven times and only converted two of those attempts, which helped Dumas to hang on for the win.
The Bulldogs go to 4-7 for the season and will next host Amarillo Highland Park on Tuesday in a boys/girls doubleheader at Tex Hanna Gym. The girls are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 8:00 p.m.
