Les Sharp is running for a seat on the Borger ISD Board of Trustees.
Sharp has lived in Borger for 22 years. He said he was welcomed by the people of Borger as a young science teacher straight out of school at Texas Tech who made him feel at home.
“I met a beautiful girl (Melanie Pepper) whom I was privileged to marry and we have been blessed with four terrific children,” he said. “Borger is a great community and a wonderful place to raise a family.”
He said a large part of Borger’s reputation as an outstanding place to raise a family is its excellent schools.
“I am very thankful to this community for all it has done for me and I would like to give back,” Sharp said.
He said he moved to Borger to teach at Borger Middle School and lead in ministry to students and has been blessed to be an integral part of the lives of many of Borger’s young men and women. He worked as a teacher for eight years and as a youth pastor at Keeler Baptist Church for three years and First Baptist Church for 11 years.
Sharp currently serves as senior pastor at Faith Covenant Church, a position he has held for seven years. He also has served on the Care Net board and been active in the Borger Football Booster Club.
Sharp said he is running for a position on the school board because he believes he can help it continue to move forward.
“Each program or organization I have been privileged to lead has experienced growth, stability, and positive change,” he said. “I am at a place in my life that I would like to bring the humble abilities I have to bear on our community as a whole.”
He has four children who are very active in Borger schools, which are Crockett Elementary, BMS, and Borger High School, and he and his family have always strived to be involved in the life of the schools in the Borger community.
Sharp also said he can bring an educational background to the position of school board trustee if elected.
“I come from a family of educators. My wife, my mother, my sister, father-in-law, and sister-in-law have been educators,” he said. “I believe I have a well-informed perspective on many issues facing public education.”
He said he believes in and cares about the kids in Borger, and that the way he spent his 20s and 30s here in the city is evidence of this fact.
Sharp said he feels he has several qualities he can bring to the board, but one in particular comes to mind.
“I am a very strategic thinker,” he said. “I thrive on the challenge of tackling tough problems, designing a strategy to solve those problems, and giving people the encouragement they need to face the challenge.”
He said he believes in Borger’s students and Borger’s school personnel.
“Despite the challenges facing Texas schools in general, and Borger schools as a result, I believe I can help Borger schools be the best they’ve ever been,” Sharp said. “I would be very thankful for your vote on May 14!”
