Seliger to be in town Sept. 10

State Senator Kel Seliger

Borger's representative in the State Senate will be in town Sept. 10.
Kel Seliger, State Senator for District 31, will be speaking at the Borger City Hall located at 600 North Main. The town hall meeting, which will be focused on the upcoming 83rd legislative session convening in January 2013, will run from 3-4 p.m. next Monday.
Seliger's involvement and leadership in the State Senate has earned him acknowledgements statewide. Bell Helicopter recently honored him with the 2012 Legislative Leadership Award. The Texas Municipal League recognized him as the 2011 Legislator of the Year for his support of local control throughout the 82nd Legislative Session.
In 2009, he took the lead on criminal justice issues, which resulted in him receiving the Texas District and County Attorney's Association's Law and Order award that year. He also received the 2009 Legislator of the Year from the Associated Security Services and Investigators of the State of Texas.
Seliger has been recognized three times by the Texas Association of Business as a Fighter for Free Enterprise for his support of policies that encourage and promote and healthy business climate in Texas. In 2009, he received the Heritage of Odessa Foundation Community Statesman Award in Government from the citizens of Odessa.
He has also been honored with the Texas Municipal League Distinguished Legislative Service Award, the Rural Legislator of the Year Award from the Association of Rural Communities in Texas, the National Federation of Independent Business/Texas Guardian of Small Business award, the "Smart on Crime" Award by the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition, the Helen Farabee Leadership Award from the Texas Perinatal Association, and the "Golden Apple," the highest award given by the Texas Association of Mid-Size Schools.
In addition to serving in the legislature, Seliger has taken leadership in the areas of education, natural resources, and criminal justice. This has resulted in appointments on the state, regional, and national level.
He was asked by Lt. Governor David Dewhurst to serve on the Advisory Board of the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, a two-year, residental, early college entrance program serving approximately 380 Texans at the University of North Texas.
Seliger has also served on the University Interscholastic League Advisory Council and has served as the State Co-Chairman for the American Legislative Exchange Council. He was also reappointed to serve on The Energy Council, a legislative organization that fosters the development of sound energy and environmental policies, and has served on the Energy and Environment Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference of the Council of State Governments.
He has been active in the National Conference of State Legislatures with membership on the Law and Criminal Justice Committee. He was also reappointed by Governor Rick Perry to the Crime Victims Institute Advisory Board at Sam Houston State University.
Seliger is a member of the National Rifle Association, the Texas Farm Bureau, and the Harley-Davidson Owners Group. He and wife Nancy have two sons.
