Save time and renew your license online

July 31, 2012

Most motorists in the state of Texas renew their driver’s licenses during the summer months than any other time of the year.
More than 1.3 million license renewals, which is nearly 30 percent of the annual total, take place during the summer. With this fact in place, lines at Texas Driver License offices get longer as well.
However, Texas drivers don’t have to pack up their paperwork or spend their gas money traveling to a driver license office and standing in line to renew. Instead, eligible current licensees can renew their license online at Texas.gov/Driver.
Online renewals are available to Texas residents ages 18-79 who are U.S. Citizens, whose current licenses expire in less than one year and have not been expired for more than a year, and whose most recent renewal was in person at a Texas Driver License office. Other eligibility requirements are available on the Texas Department of Public Safety web site.
On average, more than 2,000 Texas visit the Texas.gov/Driver web site daily to renew their driver licenses and take care of other driver-related needs. Annually, almost 50 percent of eligible license holders renew online, not only avoiding standing in line, but also sidestepping the possibility of getting the renewal office without the correct paperwork.
In addition, online applicants can renew 24/7, whether Texas Driver License offices are open or not, in only a few minutes and from the comfort of their own homes – in effect, being the only ones in line.
