On Tuesday evening, the Sanford-Fritch Lady Eagles made the short trip to Borger to take on the Borger Lady Bulldogs in a Hutchinson County Showdown at Tex Hanna Gym.
Through the end of the first three periods, the Lady Bulldogs maintained the lead. But the Lady Eagles took advantage of Lady Bulldog turnovers and foul trouble to go on a 14-2 run in the fourth period to rally back and get the 45-40 win.
Lady Eagle sophomore Mikala Setliff led the charge in the fourth period, scoring 13 of her 15 points in the final period that included going 6/6 from the free throw line.
The Lady Bulldogs started the game strong by taking advantage of 10 Sanford-Fritch turnovers in the first period to build an early 12-4 lead.
Lady Bulldog sophomores Breezy Brown and McKenzie Loftis led the Lady Bulldog good start by scoring four points each in the first period.
As the Lady Bulldogs were getting off to the good start, the Lady Eagles small roster took a big hit early in the game, when senior point guard Jacy Judd suffered what appeared to be an ankle injury.
As a result, the seven remaining Lady Eagles stepped up and did a good job keeping from being effected by fatigue as the game moved along.
In the second period, three steals led the Lady Bulldogs to go on a quick 7-0 run to build a 24-12 lead by the 3:14 mark.
Two quick baskets by Borger sophomore Nellie Embers allowed the Lady Bulldogs to maintain a 12 point lead, 28-16, to begin the third period.
But after the 5:30 mark in the third period, the Lady Bulldogs shooting went cold resulting in no points the remainder of the period, while Sanford-Fritch was able to cut their deficit to 28-21 at the end of the third period.
A jumper by Borger senior Vanessa Jones opened up the fourth period and gave the Lady Bulldogs a 30-21 lead.
But at this point, the Lady Eagles started to attack the basket in order to earn trips to the foul line, thanks to Lady Bulldog foul trouble.
The Lady Eagles hit eight free throws in a row to pull to within one point, before Setliff nailed a three pointer to Sanford-Fritch their first lead in the game, 30-32, with 5:21 to go.
Free throws by Emma Wood allowed the Lady Bulldogs to tie the game 32-32. But the Lady Eagles responded by scoring five points in a row to take the lead for good.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to battle with hopes of tying the game and perhaps forcing overtime. But three big turnovers in the final minute and a half sealed the win for the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Bulldogs drop to 3-4 for the season while the Lady Eagles improve to 2-3 for the season.
