Sanford-Fritch faces off with Abernathy in big District 1-2A showdown

October 20, 2011

Tomorrow night, the Sanford-Fritch Eagles will make the trip into the South Plains to take on the Abernathy Antelopes in a big District 1-2A showdown, which could determine who will win the district title.
So far through district play, both the Eagles and Antelopes have been able to flex their muscles as the best two teams in the district by holding undefeated district records.
So far through district play, a lot has been said about the Eagles’ weapons on the offensive side of the ball. But last week’s performance by the Eagles’ offense against Dimmitt has been one of the best outputs in the Texas Panhandle this year, with the team racking up 584 yards of total offense, including 343 yards on the ground.
As good as the Eagles have been on offense, the way the Eagles’ defense has stepped in district play has almost been just as impressive, including holding Amarillo Highland Park and Dimmitt to a combined seven points over the past two weeks.
The Antelopes will enter tomorrow night with some momentum after giving Spearman their first lost of the season last week in a 21-14 overtime win.
This season, the Antelopes have earned their 6-1 season record by playing solid defense and having a solid running game to wear teams out on offense.
Senior Payton Knight has led the Antelopes ground attack, but suffered a leg injury last Friday evening against Spearman and his status is unclear for this week’s game.
If Knight isn’t able to go, senior quarterback Austin Lewis and backup running back Isaac Pierson will be looked upon to step to try to lead the Antelopes offense.
Potentially, the Eagles’ offensive firepower might prove to be a little too much for the Antelopes’ defense to contain and Abernathy doesn’t seem to have the players in place to match the Eagles in a potential shootout.
But if Abernathy’s defense can slow down the Eagles’ offense and create a couple of turnovers, then the Antelopes could put themselves in position to get the win in a low scoring affair.
Either way, this game has the potential to be one of the better match-ups this week in any classification in West Texas this week and has some high stakes to go with it.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. in Abernathy.
