Salazar enters guilty plea

Another person involved in the recent drug bust surrounding the Fernandez family has entered a guilty plea.
According to court records, Thomas Salazar pleaded guilty to one count of cocaine possession with intent to distribute. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. He is charged with knowingly and intentionally possessing with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and/or five kilograms or more of cocaine in the Randall, Potter, and Hutchinson County areas.
Jose Luis Fernandez, aka “Junior,” 37, Francisco Villanueva Fernandez, aka “Frank,” 43, and Aaron Steven Fernandez, aka “Fat A--,” 26 were also charged with the same offense. All were arrested on Oct. 27, 2011 and went before a judge in the Federal Court House in Amarillo to enter a plea of not guilty.
According to records, Jose Fernandez sold cocaine to a confidential informant working for the police in Amarillo, the plea agreement states. Fernandez told Salazar he was to deliver the cocaine to the two men outside an unnamed retail business.
“Fernandez stated that he would call to find out how long it was going to take to arrive, and immediately placed a phone call to defendant (Salazar),” the plea agreement states. “Fernandez told the informant that the cocaine was on its way.”
Salazar arrived later with 6.83 ounces of cocaine, which ended up selling for $6,300.
Jose Fernandez is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit a drug offense, three counts of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and prohibition of illegal gambling business.
Francisco Fernandez is also charged with one count of conspiracy to commit a drug offense.
Defendant Aaron Steven Fernandez pleaded guilty on Dec. 16 to one count of possession with intent to distribute 110 pounds or more of marijuana, according to court records.
On a separate charge, Francisco’s wife, Amy Fernandez, 43, pleaded guilty on Nov. 21, 2011, to illegally structuring monetary transactions to avoid federal reporting requirements.
All Fernandez family and others charged have not been sentenced.
