PAMPA-On Tuesday evening, the Borger Bulldogs started the second round of District 1-3A play in Pampa taking on longtime rivals the Pampa Harvesters. Borger defeated the Harvesters in overtime in the district opener, so the Bulldogs knew the Harvesters were going to come out ready to even the season series.
After trailing by 20 points with six minutes to go, the Bulldogs caught on fire late to pull to within five points with 2:30 on the clock.
Unfortunately, the comeback win was not in the cards, as the Harvesters did a good job at the free throw line in the final minute to hang on for the 71-58 win.
Pampa senior guard Latigo Collins had a hot hand scoring 25 points, while junior post Derrick Pollard added 19 points for the Harvesters. However it was Borger junior Jamon Hearon ending the night as the top scorer, using seven three pointers to help him rack up 31 points.
Pampa started the game hot, led by Collins scoring 10 first period points to build a 5-19 lead.
A three pointer by Hearon and free throws by Grant Boren pulled the Bulldogs to within nine points. But Pampa ended the first half strong to go into halftime with a 16-28 lead.
Boren started the third period by scoring five straight points to pull the Bulldogs to within eight points, 22-30. But the Harvesters responded by scoring seven straight points to built back a 15 point lead.
Pampa appeared to be on the verge of getting a blowout win by extending their lead to 20 early in the fourth period. However, the Bulldogs got hot from outside and were able to quickly sink four three pointers in a three minute span to help them make it a 51-56 game with 2:30 to go.
Collins and Pollard used the free throw line to give Pampa back a nine point lead. But the Bulldogs were able to make it a seven point game on a rebound tip-in by Hearon.
As the clock started to wind down, the Bulldogs were forced to foul in order to try to get the ball back to finish the comeback. But in the final minute of the game, Collins and Pollard combined to sink nine free throws allowing Pampa to hang on for the win.
The Harvesters improve to 2-3 in district play while Borger drops to 1-4.
The Bulldogs will try to get back in the district win column in Dalhart on Friday night.
