Richard Coleman Ayers, 87, died July 23, 2011.
Graveside services will be in Fairview Cemetery, Memphis, TX at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 27, 2011 with C.W. Parker officiating.
Richard was born Monday, January 21, 1924 near the town of Kosse, in Limestone County to Clark & Bess Ayers. His family moved to Eli and then to Memphis. He graduated from Memphis High School, was a volunteer draftee and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps for the next three years. He served in both the European and Pacific Theaters and was honorably discharged. He was very patriotic all his life. He married Doris Compton in 1947 and they moved to Borger in 1948. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. for 371/2 years, retiring in 1985. Another job Richard held for many years was a Republican Precinct Chairman. He trusted Jesus as Savior and Lord and served Him in area churches and at Calvary Baptist Church for a long time. He enjoyed singing in the choir and teaching a menâ€™s bible class. He was an avid hunter and fisherman until his declining health ended those activities. He was a lifetime member of NRA and a member of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bess Costanzo.
He is survived by his wife Doris & their children; Sara Ziolkowski of Lubbock, Russell Ayers & wife Linda of Spring, TX, Thomas Ayers & wife Sandra of Houston, and Mark Ayers & wife Pam of Amarillo, nine grandchildren, Melonie Ziolowski, Melissa Broz & husband Dr. Charles, Allison Ayers, Jennifer Ayers, Christine Ayers, Pan Johnson & husband Eric Matthew Ayers, Maggie Ayers, Emily Olson & husband Mike; four great grandchildren, Bailey Dinges, Addison Johnson, Mattie Wisdom and Gunnar Olson; a brother Harold Ayers of Lubbock and a sister Hazel Cook & husband Jim of Lubbock and many nephews and nieces. He dearly loved them all.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Odyssey Hospice, 6900 I-40 West, Suite 150, Amarillo, TX 79106 and the Kathy Ryan Rural Fire and Rescue Fund, c/o Amarillo Area Foundation, 801 S. Fillmore, Suite 700, Amarillo, TX 79101.
