Ribera to take over Lubbock High baseball program

June 6, 2012

Steve Ribera

On Tuesday afternoon, Borger ISD Superintendent Chance Welch informed the Borger News Herald that Steve Ribera is resigning as the head baseball coach at Borger High School in order to take a similar position at Lubbock High School.
Ribera just finished his second season leading the Bulldogs, where the team won the District 1-3A title and reached the 3A Regional Quarterfinals in 2011 and qualified for post-season play in 2012 by finishing in second place in District 1-3A.
Ribera replaces Freddie Tobias, who resigned on May 14 after six seasons with the Westerners.
Ribera has experience coaching in the South Plains area. Prior to his time in Borger, Ribera served as the the head coach at Slaton for two seasons and had coaching stints at Tulia and Randall. In 24 seasons, Ribera has compiled a 375-260 record with 12 district championships and 21 playoff appearances.
The athletic department at Borger High School continues to go through a makeover as Ribera marks the fourth head coach at Borger High School to resign from their position this spring.
Ribera follows Rusty Purser in football, Jason Carter in volleyball, and Travis Nicks in girls’ basketball.
Leslie Young was named the new Borger ISD Athletic Director in late May.
