Relay For Life just a few weeks away

April 19, 2011

The Relay For Life for Hutchinson County is now just a few weeks away!
The 10th annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Hutchinson County will be held from 7 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2011, until 7 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at Huber Park in Borger.
According to RFL media chair Judy Allen, committee members and team members are busy making plans for the event. There will be a variety of booths set up by participating teams that will be selling food, drinks, and many other items. Other activities planned include raffles, games, contests, live entertainment, and much more.
Once again, a fireworks display will be one of the featured attractions of the evening, and this will take place at 10 p.m. that Friday evening.
In addition, Hutchinson County cancer survivors will gather at Huber Park to walk the first lap of the Relay to officially kick off the festivities, Allen said. This will take place immediately after the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. Friday, June 10.
At that time, all on-field team activities will stop and team and committee members and guests attending the event will line the track and pay tribute to local cancer survivors as they take their victory lap.
“Those not able to walk the lap can ride in a golf cart or wheelchair,” Allen said. “This is one of the highlights of the evening.”
Following the survivor lap, all team members will take the track in the team lap, where each team revs up their Relay spirit just a notch to yell, cheer, and in general set the tone for the Relay evening.
At dusk on Friday, all activity on the field will again cease as the luminaria ceremony is held. All team and committee members and survivors and guests will line the track as the candles in each of the luminaria bags are lit.
Allen said these luminaria bags are purchased by donation in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of someone who has lost their fight with the disease.
“Those being honored or remembered do not have to be Hutchinson County residents, so honor your loved ones from around the world and donate to a worthy cause,” she said. “The candles will burn all night long as a reminder that Relay For Life is about honoring and remembering and raising funds to defeat cancer.”
Those purchasing luminarias are invited to submit photos of those being honored or remembered for a video presentation that will take place immediately after the bags have been lit. If you submitted a photo last year, you do not have to submit one again this year.
For information on the video presentation, contact co-chair Cathy Phillips at 806-282-4605.
To purchase a luminaria, contact Brandy Callahan at 806-206-9367. The luminaria will also be available at the Relay For Life of Hutchinson county booth at the Hutchinson County Health Fair, set for Friday, May 13, at the Service Drilling Center for Access and Innovation across the street from Frank Phillips College.
Teams are still being formed for the RFL. Those wanting to form a team or wanting to join a Relay team can contact 2011 Teams Chair Denise Webb by calling her at 806-878-2582 or emailing her at neecee35@hotmail.com.
County cancer survivors are needed. Anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer (including skin cancer) is urged to register with the local Relay For Life of Hutchinson County.
Survivors may register online at www.relayforlife.org/hutchinsoncotx or may obtain a registration form by calling Survivor Chair Brandy Callahan at 806-206-9367.
“Survivors must register each year,” Callahan said. “Even if you registered last year, we need you to register with us again this year. Each year we start over with registration and we are asking each survivor in our county to register with us.
A dinner honoring all survivors registered will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, at the Service Drilling Center for Access and Innovation. Survivors registering with the Relay For Life committee by the Friday, May 13 deadline will receive a survivor t-shirt and an invitation to come to the survivor dinner.
Survivors must register with the 2011 Relay Committee to be eligible to receive a t-shirt or invitation to the dinner.
“Whether you are a survivor, are interested in being on a team, purchasing a luminaria or just want to support a good cause, mark your calendar for Friday, June 10, 2011, at 7 p.m. and join us at Huber Park as we spend the night making memories and raising funds to defeat cancer,” Allen said.
