After trailing by 19 points with eight minutes to go, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen put together a couple of late runs to get to within ten with three minutes remaining. Unfortunately, a comeback wasn’t meant to be as the Howard College Red Hawks did a good job at the free throw line in the final minute to hang on for a 68-55 win in WJCAC action.
The Red Hawks appeared to be on the verge of taking control of the game early by building a 17-28 lead with just over three minutes to go in the first half.
However, the Plainsmen ended the first half strong, led by Taquan McDew nailing back-to-back three pointers to help make it a 24-29 score at halftime.
The Plainsmen came out strong to start the second half, with McDew hitting another three, Akeem Johnson getting the tip in followed by a jumper by Greg Nelson making it a one point game, 31-32.
Yet the next ten minutes belonged to the Red Hawks, who went on a 21-3 lead to take a commanding 34-53 lead.
However, on this night no one had a hotter hand than McDew who would hit three three pointers in a row, followed by Montero Rice converting an old fashioned three point play to pull to Plainsmen to within nine points, 46-55 with about four minutes to go on the clock.
The Red Hawks responded by taking back a 12 point lead, but a jumper by Rice and a three pointer by Nelson allowed the Plainsmen to cut their deficit to ten points two more times.
Down by ten with just over a minute to go, the Plainsmen resorted to fouling in order to try to have a chance for the comeback win. But the Red Hawks converted on five of six free throw attempts in the final minute to hang on for the win.
The loss drops the Plainsmen to 1-6 in conference play, 9-14 overall, while Howard College improves to 5-2 in conference play and 16-5 overall.
The Plainsmen will hit the road on Thursday to take on the Odessa College Wranglers.
